He then moved on to play for Real Madrid, one of the most successful clubs in Spanish football history, from 1973 to 1984.

After retiring as a player, del Bosque transitioned into coaching. He served as an assistant coach for Real Madrid in the 1990s before being appointed as the head coach in 1999. During his tenure as the head coach, from 1999 to 2003, he led Real Madrid to two La Liga titles and two UEFA Champions League titles, among other domestic and international trophies.

However, del Bosque is most renowned for his time as the manager of the Spanish national team. He took over as the manager in 2008 and achieved tremendous success during his tenure. Under his leadership, Spain won the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, becoming the first Spanish team to win the tournament. Del Bosque received numerous accolades for his managerial achievements, including the FIFA World Coach of the Year award in 2012. He stepped down as the manager of the Spanish national team after the 2016 UEFA European Championship, where Spain was eliminated in the Round of 16.

Vicente del Bosque is widely respected for his calm and composed demeanor, as well as his tactical acumen. Throughout his career, he was known for his emphasis on team unity, discipline, and possession-oriented football, which became Spain's trademark during their successful period under his guidance.
